I took a look at this concept in one of my early art blog posts, featuring the book, NOTAN – The Dark-Light Principle of Design by American artists and teachers Dorr Bothwell and Marlys Mayfield. NOTAN is a Japanese word which means “dark-light”. The principle of Notan as it relates to design is defined as the interaction between positive (light) and negative (dark) space. The word, however, means more than that. My childhood immersion has created a life-long interest in line and compositional cropping which people might dismiss as, “well that's just Roz, she designs books after all,” (images are always being cropped for cover design effect or to make interesting chapter opening pages in textbooks). What caught my eye, however, was Jane's tutorial on NOTAN, which she describes as “a Japanese word which means “dark-light.” The word, however, means more than that. Middle School Studio Lesson Notan is the term used by the Japanese to express the principle of “dark-light” as an element of design. I've already got hold of Notan: The Dark-Light Principle of Design. It runs deeper Notan-beauty means the harmony resulting from the combination of dark and light spaces—whether colored or not—whether in buildings, in pictures, or in nature. Notan is a Japanese word which means “dark-light.” The word, however, means more than that.
